Finally, after delays with contractors and shipping, I can show you our bathroom renovation!
After discovering we would not be able to knock the small linen closet out, I decided to go with light flooring, paint, and tile to make the space feel as big as possible. But before we go any further I have to show you what we were working with:
A dark tiny grey box with shower paneling falling off, a tub that was leaking into the basement, and a vanity that was off center from the lighting above. I cannot begin explain to you guys how depressing this room was before.
So again, because there was no chance of removing the small linen closet or adding a window, light grey paint and white tile was the way to go.
I went with Benjamin Moore Misty Grey paint for the walls and Distant Grey for the ceiling. By painting the walls, trim, doors, and built-in shelf the same color helped refine the bathroom and give it more modern feel.
Every door in our house had added decorative trim, except for the bathroom linen closet. I’m not sure why the previous owners felt they had to stop here – because there is trim on our laundry chute door. Yes, it’s fancy! – so we made sure to add those while the doors were removed while tiling the floors. Grey grout is used throughout the bathroom. I originally thought about going with black grout, but the grey is a bit softer while still providing a nice contrast.
I wanted to purchase a new vanity but we decided to give the existing one a facelift with black paint, new hardware, and a new faucet. I was convinced we needed one with better storage but it turns out when you completely transform your bathroom it encourages you to reorganize and go through all your toiletries 🙌🏻Bonus: staying within your project budget!
We centered the vanity beneath the light and mirror. I cannot begin to tell you how much that bugged me! But I knew we would update this bathroom at some point so I kept telling myself to calm down (just like Emily Blunt does in the Devil Wears Prada, you know the part of the movie I’m talking about! 😂) and save that attention to detail for my current projects. Patience is key in any project, especially when DIY is involved.
I love that we now have a relaxing and airy bathroom to use in our home. I never was a bath person until we finished this project. I love some salt soaks with a book and my favorite beverage.
Now on to the next project in the Skaar house: the basement. We are converting it to a shared office space with maybe a cozy lounge for watching movies. Stay tuned!
