Hello again! I finally have another blog to share: new sew curtain hack with grommet panels!
I loved the Belgian Flax Linen Velvet Colorblock curtains in white/frost from West Elm for our bedroom. As they say, champagne taste with a beer budget! I found these similar ones on Amazon for half the price (score!). But they have grommets (insert gasping emoji here). With curtains it’s all about preference and I don’t really love the grommet drapes. Not hating on them, I just prefer a polished clean look. So what is a designer to do? I scoured the Internet and found this DIY from “a Pop of Pretty” and I was so pleased with the result!
For this hack you will need:
- (2) 8 packs of curtain rings in the color of your choice
- A steamer
- (2) curtain panels with grommets.
Here’s how to achieve this fabulous and affordable look!
Step 1: Fold the Grommets
Lay your curtain panel flat on the ground and fold at the top panel with the grommets at the seam.
Step 2: Curtain Rings!
Attach your curtain clip rings to your curtain panel directly above the grommets, centered. It’s important to space your clips evenly so the folds turn out nicely when you hang your drapes. Kerri recommends placing the clips on the ends at the corner so it helps close the gap from the fold. You can also sew this shut with a little stitch or too, but the clip seems to work fine for me.
Repeat as needed for the number of panels.
Step 3: Hang the Drapes
Place each drapery onto your curtain rod. Once you have them up, it’s time to shape the folds! Take one end of your panel and pull the fabric between the first two rings toward you or away from you – whichever comes most naturally. When I was doing this, some of the grommets were pushing the folds in and out on their own, so tweak it as you need to create the pleats.
Once you are done, use an extra curtain clip to hold the folds together for the next step.
Step 4: Stiffen the pleats from the folds
Once you have your extra curtain clip in place, take a steamer and run it from top to bottom to stiffen the pleats. You can let them sit like this for a day or so if you feel that your pleats need extra time to take shape.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Take a look at your fabulous work and enjoy the crisp, chic look you have created! Links to the products I used below:
